This product is required in my county when mounting an electrical box where tht box will be surrounded by combustible material, i.e. wood. So if you are building a log home, are going to use wood siding or anything else, this is to seal that remaining distance between the front of the outlet box and the wood. After a career of firefighting I don't believe I have ever seen a fire started from an arc in an eletric box and surrounding wook. The prople who write codes for electircal and plumbing and all the trades are generallly the MANUFACTURERS. So they like to come up with new things to keep manufacturing more so thier companies grow. Anyway, the easiest thing to do is to before you add an appliance to the electircal box it to slip the extender over the wires. There are tabs that seal over the outside of the wood which are covered by the outlet cover, switch plate or other appliances plate. Also even though I had a metal sided building, because it was sheeted for strenght with OSB, I still had to use these. Of course they don't make these extenders for 200 amp breaker panels.

Our 1957 home has thicker walls and ceilings due to the original, well insulated plaster. We needed these in order to hang a fan by filling in the gap from the electrical box to the edge of the ceiling. We added some rubber tube spacers between these and the electrical box for extra stabilization.

Lost a star for the extras on it from the mould, I need to cut some corners.It's perfect for job, it goes well into the ceiling box and you will never see it again after the light installation.

I extended farther than usual. It required purchase of 3 inch screws (8-32 x 3"). Worked perfectly.
