This video phone is great for it's simple way to work. I gave it to my mom who doesn't know how to turn ON a pc and now I can call she for free and by video. Now she doen't miss me that much while I'm gone. The only problem with this product is that if you live in a hot place with no general AC the fan will turn on while your callingand you will hear it as load as your voice volume. That's the only reason I rate it as 4 starts.

EDIT 2: I ended up having the product sent back 4 times for the same issue. The battery could not hold a charge. Each time they send it back it's just as bad. The last time I spoke with them I told them very clearly that the problem was with the battery and requested that the faulty battery be replaced, but the customer service insisted that the entire unit had to be checked. In all likelihood they never checked the battery. They probably did a one minute "check to see if it works" test and then shipped it back. I think I would rather a company tell me that they aren't going to fix it instead of pretending to.I eventually gave up on getting any help out of customer service and just used it as it was until recently when a new issue started up.Now whenever I check my voicemail the entire unit shuts itself off. I can turn it back on, but any attempt to check my voice mail results in the entire unit shutting down again. At this point it isn't useful at all to me anymore. Just a glorified paper weight.I will never buy an Asus product again. I don't believe they are capable of building a quality of product free of defects nor do I believe they are capable of checking and repairing a defective product.______________EDIT:The unit failed twice in the year since I bought it and had to be sent in for repairs. Asus only pays for shipping back to me, and requires that I pay to insure the high price tag with the post office. So I ended up spending an extra 50.00 through the year, with a sum of 6 to 8 weeks of that year without use of the unit, and when I got it back the last time it's in even worse condition. The battery does not hold a charge anymore. The customer service, however, is very polite. Although it is now past warranty, because it was not properly addressed last time I sent it in they are working with me. Even so, I may have a higher cost._______________Original Review:I purchased this item to be a replacement for my telephone, and for the most part, it certainly does the job. It worked right out of the box and even included a 20 minute battery for times that I want to walk around the house with it. A bit too big to use as portable, but I was able to coordinate work long distance with it. Video quality was very good and the custom camera settings were helpful. If I moved the camera around allot it did get a bit jumpy, but for the most part the video was steady.I tested it while running netflix video on one computer, and several bandwidth intensive applications on another, and using cable internet through a router the sound and video quality were not affected at all so it proved itself to be very reliable. It did take me a little while to realize that simply calling the phone number of a skype contact won't enable video. I have to contact them using their skype name. One feature I really liked was that, after a minute or so, the screen turns into a clock, and after some time of inactivity the whole screen turns off. It would then turn itself on when a call comes in, or when I touch it. This was a very nice power saving feature... however... it would have been better if there was a single button I could press to force it into this mode.Another feature I liked was that the power strip seemed to have a kind of battery of it's own. I noticed that the blue light stays lit even after unplugging it for a short time which seemed to suggest that it uses an extra small battery to prevent power spikes. My favorite feature was that there was an option to prevent the video from turning on automatically when answering the phone. That way I never have to worry about appearances, and I can disable or enable the video any time during a call without interrupting anything. One feature I did NOT like was the auto microphone volume. People often tell me I sound like I am talking into a can. There is no where I can go in to manually set the microphone volume, so it fluctuates during a call based on how loud I am speaking... The feature does come in handy though, so I give it 5 stars regardless. I just wish it was as great as the speaker quality. In any case, it was money well spent and satisfies all my needs.

Purchased this product for parents and was easy to setup. Has battery pack but doesn't last long, so just plugin all the time. Now my parents can contact me through Skype without use of a computer. Also try the Asus site to get an additional $50.00 rebate. Would purchase another for my in-laws.

I've heard some mixed reviews about this phone, especially on Amazon. There seems to have been some bad experiences with this device. I wasn't expecting much, but was proven quite wrong. This device is a lot thinner than I originally thought, it's not bulky and could easily fit in a desk corner or on a bookshelf. Good size. The interface is easy to use and very clean. For touchscreen lovers, the touchscreen does an OK job and is fairly response - it's not great, though. For everyone else who wants some easier and simpler navigation, I recommend the buttons (this is what I use). There aren't too many buttons, but there are just enough to easily navigate to your contacts, make calls and change settings (volume, start/end call, main menu, back, and the up/down/left/right/select button hub). The device has a host of languages available, which is nice if you want to contact out of country relatives. The video quality is alright. It's not impressive, but really - it doesn't have to be. Video over the internet, especially instant streaming like video calls, will never achieve good quality with residential internet speeds. The video is a little blurry/pixelated, but it doesn't hinder the chatting experience. The mic works fine, no complaints there. In a nutshell, the video quality is the same as you would get with a decent USB webcam (what I use on my desktop), but the resolution is sacrificed when you start streaming over the web.Seems to me that many people have complained about the WiFi being dropped. I have WiFi at my house, but I connected the video phone via ethernet, and it does a great job. I guess for this device - stay away from the WiFi?This is a great device, I really like it, and for $150 (as of 12/22), it's a fairly decent price. It's great for grandparents or out of state/country/city relatives and friends you want to keep in touch with often. I recommend it. Overall 7.5/10.
