When looking for advice on emission and vacuum leaks, so many people say it's just the gas cap, and often those that replace the gas cap say only an original part is good enough. I've never had a problem with loose gas caps, so I have always been skeptical of that answer, plus I have swapped gas caps with other cars that weren't having problems, so it seemed I eliminated the gas cap as the culprit. After spending time and over $100 on parts fighting a code that was preventing vehicle inspection, I decided this inexpensive gas cap was worth a try. Did it fix the problem? No, but when I did find and fix the problem, it was confirmed that my old gas cap and this new one work fine, so even though I didn't need a gas cap, this one worked well enough for my vehicle to pass inspection, so an original equipment item isn't necessary. If you would like to read how I fixed the problem, read on. This started with small leak code P0442, but I couldn't find anything with a smoke test, so I followed other internet advice and started looking at the purge control solenoid and the leak detection pump. I disassembled and cleaned them, and thought I reassembled them correctly, but then I started getting codes P0441, P0455, and P1494. Figuring my old parts were now malfunctioning, I bought replacement parts, but still had codes. I performed smoke tests before and didn't find anything, but then saw smoke at the leak detection pump filter. This is normal, since the port to this filter is open when the car is off, and presents the largest "leak" when smoke testing. In order to seal the system, this port must be plugged. I disconnected the large hose going to the leak detection pump (not the one going to the filter) and shoved in a screwdriver with a handle that plugged the hose. Now when performing the smoke test, the system was sealed and smoke was quickly seen when the gas cap was removed, and when pulling other hoses to check. With all of the hoses connected and the gas cap tight, smoke came from the top of the gas tank at a molding seam near a hose connection toward the front of the car. I dropped the tank and applied Seal-All to the hole, which fixed the problem, turned off the codes, and allowed the car to pass inspection. The smoke test was not helpful until I plugged the large hose to the leak detection pump. Of course, once the diagnostic work is complete, unplug and reattach all of the hoses as they should be for normal operation. This is the smoke tester I used: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08HY3RNFS

I have a Jeep Patriot Latitude that has some rusting around the area where a gas cap screws on... thought I would mention that first. I know very little about issues that happen with vehicles, so I'm sure I'll be explaining things in a very elementary way πThe original gas cap rolled away one day when I was fueling up, I bought a pretty expensive replacement from the store with the piece that attaches to the door so I wouldn't lose it again. Shortly after, I had an error code light up my dash saying *gas cap*. So, I buy a different gas cap. That didn't work... bought another. All of them felt loose when trying to screw them on, but I was told they are a fit for my Jeep.In total, before purchasing this one here on Amazon, I had gone through 5 gas caps and spent way too much money... way way too much. I was told that I wouldn't ever find a cap that fits correctly due to the rusting issue that's happening... and that's a HIGHLY expensive thing to fix right now.So, I looked on here and found this one that looks exactly like the original that came with my Jeep. For only a few dollars! Really...I honestly didn't have high hopes that it would fit correctly, but for the price I just couldn't pass it up.This cap fits PERFECTLY. Not loose, I can hear and feel it click tightly. My gas cap error code went away about a week later... it's been a few months since I put it on and I can see a significant improvement in gas mileage.I never imagined how joyfully excited I would get over a gas cap that costs a few bucks... I've bought a million things off of Amazon throughout the years, and this little cap is in my top 5 favorite, most useful purchases ever.

Works well. Good fit. Reasonable price. Only drawback is no lanyard. Could be transferred from old cap, but not really needed. Stopped repeat gas cap loose message.

I got this as a replacement for my 'Gas Cap' and small evap leak check engine code my van was throwing. I have now gone through three tanks of fuel with the new cap in place. The gas cap warning went away after about a quarter of a tank and has not come back. The small evap leak code went away seemingly for good after my third tank and has not come back in a few months. For the price, it gets the job done and got rid of my two warning lights. It was a perfect fit on the van, it doesn't have a tether strap.Edit: I used the cap for about 6 months and the check engine like came back on and then the gas cap warning light came back. I have switched to a different cap and I'm crossing my fingers it lasts longer.

I Lost my original and tried multiple other types locally available, none would keep my CEL clear. This one looked funny out of the box as there is a weird triangle tab at the beginning of the threads, and appeared that it would not fit properly, but once I tried it, it scewed right in without issue. I reset my CEL light and it has remained off for weeks. So far I consider this problem solved.Proper brand item as well not some no-name junk
