This 1/2-14 "NPT" Kaimex die is indeed a tapered die - you can see the diameter changes from one face of the die to the other. However, the taper is NOT the standard NPT taper - the taper is something else.When trying to use this to chase threads on different pieces of standard NPT items (PVC, copper, iron, brass, etc.), the die would invariably jam after just a few rotations. All pipes were clean and all accepted standard 1/2-14 NTP fittings with no problem. We spent some effort to try to diagnose the problem before submitting this review.The tpi does indeed measure 14 when using a thread gauge, so that's not the problem.There are no burrs, chips, or obvious defects - other than the taper is wrong.Interestingly, we bought a 3/4-inch version of this Kaimex die at the same time, and that 3/4-inch die works just fine - it chases the full width of 3/4-inch threads.On the good side, the machining looks nice. We can't comment on longevity since this is being returned.

Worked great this size retreading a sprinkler iron pipe that lost its thread from a lawnmower shearing off its brass sprinkler head…. Saved me several hundred dollars for sure
