I have had eye surgeries on both eyes since 1985 and I have recurring issues that require me to sleep with or wear an eye shield. After a procedure they apply the shield, usually with one or more oval-shaped gauze eye pads over your eye. The pad’s contact with your eyelid keeps the eye closed. Aluminum shield with a cloth rim are usually smaller (no idea why) and ointments “goop up” the cloth rim. Plastic shield are washable and reusableThis shield has two design features that make it more comfortable than the ones that I have received from my eye docs. These have a raised outerrim that helped reduce the skin indentation that’s is cause by the time of my regular shields. They also have a higher ‘dome’ that gives my clearance between the dome and the eyelid and eyelashes.I am currently prescribed an ointments for use at night because as previous surgery resulted in my right eye not closing in one area of my lower lid. I wear a shield every mid and this shield immediately stopped the ointment from being ‘picked up’ by the shield surface, rather than letting it stay on the eye.I wash the shield with a drop of Dawn dish soap each morning and it’s ready for reuse. I use three strips of paper medical tape to hold the shield in place. One strip, about 4 inches long is placed across the center of the shield, too yo notion, to hold the shield above my eye brow snd onto my cheek bone. A 1 inch piece secures the small end to the bridge if my nose and a 1.5 inch piece secures the other end to my temple srea. The tape comes off easy with a gentle pulling and leaves no residue. One suggestion. These are clear and can ‘disappear’ if dropped against almost any background of any color. . I use a black Sharpie and mark the outside surface with about a one inch mark at four places around the edge.I keep my spare shields in their individual ziplock back in my box of eye meds. The quality and design of these shields are the best I have ever seen (no pun intended).

The reflex action with an eye injury is to rub it -- Bad idea! The eye shields prevent this action until medical treatment can be obtained. The ventilation holes are a nice touch, though I think they're intended for long-term or daily wear during recovery from an injury; my primary use for the eye shield is protection for injuries that are beyond my capability to provide first aid. The only think I wish was included was a padded edge all the way around so it isn't plastic in direct contact with skin. The edges are not sharp, but I can imagine it getting uncomfortable after a while. I carry several types of conforming adhesive tape, so I might apply some before positioning the shield over the eye and taping it in place.
