I originally bought a cheap mandolin just to see if I would be interested in playing it. The strings that came with the mandolin sounded okay when playing individual notes but had really low quality when strumming. I replaced the original strings with these ones and the difference in sound was amazing, both for playing individual notes and for strumming.

What's there to say but D'ADDARIO makes good strings for a decent price.

Für Gitarre und Mandoline nehm ich meistens D'addario und bin immer sehr zufrieden.Sie halten lang die Stimmung und rosten nicht oder ähnliches.Sehr empfehlenswert !!

As novice Mandolin players we had been recommended these strings by members of mandolin cafe. They exceeded our expectations and were easy to fit with no snapped strings. Each pair of strings was neatly packaged in it's own paper pouch and the set was packaged in another plastic wallet for increased protection. Now that they have settled in they hold their tune and sound fantastic. They also look nice too!

These strings are definitely high quality and worth every penny, hence the five stars. The tone is perfectly balanced across strings, and they settled in after only a few days of light playing. I don't think they're right for me, though, and as reading reviews has been very helpful for me in choosing strings I wanted to add my own experience for others as well. I have been playing on them for about three months, a couple hours a week or so.I am new to the mandolin and bought these strings for use on a very cheap instrument. I play other string instruments (violin, viola, cello, but ukulele being the only other fretted one I play), and I have strong fingers but I did find the guage to be a bit too heavy for me, particularly on the G strings. It was hard to push down enough - especially on frets above 5 - to get a decent tone out on that low string. It is worth mentioning that I have average woman hands, so for average-handed guys or just people with large hands this may not be as much of a problem.I found the strings to be incredibly loud. For some people I'm sure that's a desired trait, but I'm playing alongside two acoustic guitar players and any time I start strumming I drown them and our singing voices out.I also found picking melody lines to be difficult. I tried a wide variety of pick weights but the string response was a little too slow for what I was trying to do (combined with my ability) and the notes just sortof thud and feel out of time. Of course the more I play I'm sure the better this will get, but the point is that for a beginner these may not be the best choice. I am ordering the light version of these strings (J73) and think I will make faster progress with those. I'm not entirely sure how much difference a .002 reduction in gauge on the G strings will make, but if those are still too heavy I'll probably order the J62s which aren't phosphor wound and have a .034 guage G.Naturally, results vary wildly from instrument to instrument. Maybe on a more solid beast the resonance rounds out the strings' cutting power. Maybe on a mandolin with better setup it would be easier to get those notes on the G strings to ring out. So if I keep playing and eventually buy a nice instrument, I'll come back and try these again as a non-beginner.
