I'm so glad we bought this printer. Our prior HP printer died after 5 years of regular usage. We hesitated, initially, about buying a refurbished printer. But this model (HP OfficeJet Pro 6978) had all of the features we were looking for and we liked the style & color more than the brand new HP models. This printer came in a non-original box, but was packed in the original packing materials, with all ink cartridges and instruction manuals sealed, and a power cord. Upon close inspection, I don't think it was ever used at all -- it was in completely new condition. Obtaining it at refurbished/open-box price was a deal, and it has worked flawlessly so far for 3 months. No regrets.

We didn't use it much up until this week as we were slower. We were replacing the exact same printer we already had that served us quite well. unfortunately, as soon as we started to use it a but more it constantly jams, takes forever to print and is overall not good unfortunately

When this printer was received there were printing issues. It appears it was a defective cartridge but I had to go out and buy a new cartridge to verify this. The reason being when I called the support number that came with the printer I was transferred to HP Support and was informed the printer was sold to me without warranty and they could not assist me. The printer is functioning properly but future buyers be aware "YOU WILL RECEIVE AN ITEM WITHOUT WARRANTY".

As noted by others this printer itself is pretty good but the software is a disaster. The printer is not compatible with current Wi-Fi security protocols which means you cannot use it as a wireless printer. If you try to connect directly you’re going to be frustrated by the terrible software. In other words it’s a wireless printer that requires a direct cable connection. HP has been struggling with software for over three years now. Unbelievable.

Purchased this HP 6978 as I had good success with my last HP printers but could no longer get ink for them as they had been discontinued. Unfortunately the software on this model is a huge pain in the arse. Every single time I go to use it ( a few times a week) it goes into a 'printer maintenance' cycle which runs for 5+ minutes not allowing me to print anything...and then, if Im lucky, it will actually print...sometimes it doesn't print what I've asked it to..so after 5 minutes of waiting for it I now have to go back to whatever I was trying to print and attempt to reprint it again. Its not the greatest on ink either..seems to really plow thru the ink in the cartridges faster than expect( especially considering how long it sits inactive) which makes me wonder if the (printer maintenance) is actually using up ink? Regardless this will be the last HP printer I buy as I can only assume the software is the same on all newer models. If you go on any of the support forums the question has been asked regarding the "maintenance" issue and no solution has been given by HP support..they simply respond with the usual "unplug it and wait 30 seconds" line of BS

Are you nostalgic for a printer that’s offline when you need it most? How about one that defaults to factory settings when you set new print parameters? Longing for the days of constant, never-ending low ink reminders for impossibly tiny and expensive cartridges? Overall just tired of hitting “print” and having things run smoothly? Well you’re in luck! Maybe you just really want that new ink subscription service that no one asked for.. oh you don’t want it? Well too bad. We are going to try to force you into it through ceaseless reminders and prompts! This printer brings back all my 80’s and 90’s nostalgia. With this, gone are the days of intuitive setup and design. Who needs them? Ever curious what drove your favorite Office Space characters over the edge. Look no further! Relive your early days of terrible interface. My favorite feature at the moment is when you go to print, and it says it’s offline. So you press power to wake it up and it still says it’s offline. So you try to print a few times and that doesn’t work so you clear the queue and restart your computer. Turn everything off and back on.. then come back a few hours later and you’ve got hundreds of sheets of paper now from the print jobs you went somewhere else to complete. Thanks HP! It’s really like being in 1994.

I live in Berlin, Germany, and I bought it for my nephew in Long Beach, CA. Buying (renewed) through the Amazon Marketplace made the transaction easy.I looked around for an hour or so, and finally settled on this model, even though my nephew specifically said he didn't need the fax function. To make a long story short, my nephew said that if he hadn't been told, from the optics and the function, he wouldn't have known the machine wasn't new. There was one small issue, but the seller's tech support was helpful, even though they couldn't resolve it. It seems to have been related to the Instant Ink deal. When my nephew was looking through the various settings, etc., the Instant Ink window said he had printed 119 pictures per month and recommended that he sign up for the appropriate program. This obviously wasn't true.I called the seller's tech support and they confessed this had happened before and could be attributed to sloppy work by the technician who "renewed" the machine. They assured me, though, in had no influence whatsoever on whether my nephew decides to join Instant Ink or not. We'll see.Anyway, as I've written, my nephew is very happy so far. He's had it two months.

My 8 year old HP 8600 Pro print head finally died for good and I got this one.The HP 6978 seems to have the same capabilities of the 8600 (dual side printing and scanning), except that the cartridges a LOT smaller than the ones for the 8600 (which is a good way for HP to make money eh?)Anyway, despite being sold as "refurbished" the packaging and printer condition were pretty much the same as a brand new printer.I tested **all** functions I care about (printing quality, dual side printing and scanning, etc) and everything looked good.Side note/advice: A hard lesson I learned about "Amazon refurbished products" is to make sure to test them **thoroughly** before the 90-day return/warranty period expires... E.g. my pair of refurbished wireless Sony headphones worked great... that is, until I took them on a plane trip and discovered the wired connection does not work (unfortunately long after the return period)...Anyway, I'll update this comment if I run into any problems over the next few months of using this printer!

Product was great for the first year and a half, and I love the Insta-ink program. However, it has stopped printing blue completely. Have done multiple print head cleanings, alignments, and cartridge changes but it's just not working. I wish I had purchased a cheaper one and wouldn't feel so bad having to replace it so soon.
