Drill snapped in half using a step bit after less than 2 months of use. Makita won't replace it under warranty. Will never buy another Makita tool.

I’ve heard these drills are great.Bought this one “brand new” on Amazon. Looks like it’s been used hard for about 10 years, without anyone making any effort to clean it. Box barely held together by tape. Charger has a loose wire. Terrible.

I looked at other top brands but liked this set up. Makita reviews and test on these all seemed good. I had great service with my old Makita drill. I hope these will work as good. I use my drills a lot and wanted a smaller and lighter set to carry around. Check around for store sales and specials on these.

The Makita sub compact series is probably the best thing to happen to DIYers, wood workers, craft enthusiasts and really anyone who wants a high quality, powerful, lightweight and efficient driver set. I would not recommend these for construction sites, while they use higher quality plastic for the molding, it's not as thick as it is on the regular Makita models and uses far less metal to reinforce and most notably, the chuck is plastic and not the higher quality Yukinawa brand metal chuck on the normal Makita brushless tools-- in short, a drop onto concrete from a ladder could crack or damage the more sensitive areas, so home or shop use makes more sense for not only the compact design but build as well.Sizing:The size and weight are impressive considering they're 18V drivers. Really shocking if you compare them side by side to a Bosch 18v set or honestly even the Dewalt 12V sets. They are a little bigger than the Milwaukee and Bosch 12V compacts that use the plug batteries insead of your normal sliding battery, but the fact you can use ANY 18V Makita battery, even the 6.0Ah batteries if you wanted to have a weirdly bottom-heavy compact tool, it's amazing the versatility you can get out of such small tools.Power:Makita is typically more known for their motor efficiency and the sub compact series so far seem to be holding up. A test of a really good driver is seeing how it holds up under stress with thicker pressure treated wood and concrete block and the drill holds up through reasonable stress, but the impact driver is the star of the show with a self-feeding bit through a 4x4 PT fence post and only a little bit of catching. With a masonry bit, the drill driver had some issue with concrete block, but overall not bad-- you can get an impact 1/4" shank masonry bit that will do just fine for the impact driver.Cons:This particular kit in Canada only comes in a 1.5Ah battery kit with a normal charger. In the USA, this kit comes with a 2.0Ah battery kit where the batteries have power indicators (LEDs that show you the remaining battery) and a fast charger. So consider that if you're watching videos on YouTube or reading American reviews. Is This For You?:You can absolutely get an impact driver and drill driver combo kit for cheaper than this set, but with less maintenance due to the brushless motor (brushless simple explanation: magnets are used in the back portion of the rotation drive motor function instead of a mechanical "brush" contact that creates more heat and draws more power-- magnets will run more efficient, create less heat making them less likely to overheat/stall and likely won't need replacing over time), you can potentially get way more use out of the drivers in long sessions, you'll potentially get more out of your batteries and the size of the tools make them an excellent choice for situations in tight spaces or if you problems gripping heavy tools for a long time.If this review was helpful, please click the button below!
