There's a huge amount of material here, including songs and exercises. I recommend this book for that reason. However, be warned that there are no count-ins on the audio tracks. I find that very frustrating, and that's why I give it four stars instead of 5.

Before buying this book i had been teaching myself mandolin for a bit over three months. I am an avid study, so i quickly played through all of the beginners books I had purchased and needed a challenging and comprehensive book which would take me to a respectable level.Mandolin is not my first instrument- I also play violin, piano, and trumpet, but during all my time playing those instruments i have not come across a book as well put together as "The Complete Mandolinist". This book makes scales fun and provides many, many exercises which make learning and mastering scales feel like enjoyable music making, and covers left hand and right hand technique with equal care, going over picking patterns, finger positions, tremolo, ornamentation, chords, etc. If it is something you should know about playing, this book covers it.But what is best about this book is that it doesn't just "cover" material like it is crossing it off a list. It almost tricks you into improving technique and learning by offering so many songs and tunes which are tailored for exactly the skill being worked on. And coming in at over 200 pages, there is enough material that it doesn't get boring or repetitive- I have been playing the first fifty pages over and over every day since i got the book a week ago and i am still excited with the exercises- that is awesome! I have never been excited to play scales and really ant to dominate them until this book.I really don't post reviews- i might rate something with stars, but written reviews are something i usually don't do. This book ins't usual in any way, however. If you want to learn the mandolin this book has something to teach you, and you will have a great time with it. It is that simple. just stop looking and get this book. The only disclaimer i want to throw out is that this isn't a book for someone who just picked up the mandolin yesterday- this is what you will want to come to as soon as the songs/exercises in your beginner book become easy.

Agree with other reviewer that you need a bit of musical knowledge (reading notation, at least) before you start with this but if you have that then this is a fantastic resource covering a vast range of techniques/skills. The early duets make the otherwise rather boring exercises that are a feature of all instrument learning more fun. However, I'd have liked a couple of beats of warning before each first note - you always have to catch up as the music starts immediately. Haven't got far through this yet but I was delighted to see that duo-style, composite rhythms, shifting, speed work etc are all in there. Oh, to be able to get that far! My book was trashed in delivery by the Post Office but that was no fault of the supplier who packaged it well and marked it "please handle with care"! I'd also recommend Caterina Lichtenberg's DVD "Basic Techniques of Classical Mandolin" for those who, like me, need some visual input too.

I don't think this is a learn at home by yourself book. Among other things, you will really need to know how to read music to use it effectively. However, I can see that it would be a good resource if you were having lessons. A major gripe is that the songs/exercises do not have a count in.
