First, I replaced the 2-4500 watt elements in my 50 gallon Rheem water heater. I went with a Dernord 2500 watt in the upper and a 3500 watt in the lower, since the lower does 75% of the heating within the tank. I left the thermostats the same after evaluation household use with family taking showers, etc over a weekend. No thermostat adjustments were necessary and heat up times were essentially the same. Being that the 2 Dernord replacements were lower wattage, the only way to explain this is that the elements have more surface area for heat transfer with the U-shape so added heat transfer is a plus. I look forward to saving few bucks on energy by lowering my kW demand charge, but the longer life due to the design is the most significant. I am using well water with a high iron content so element life is a significant factor for me. Will update in a year or so to advise on life and any energy savings.
